not the state of hawaii, but the territory of hawaii. and when you start to read about dan inouye's life, his young life, you start to think this is just an ordinary, average guy. he's going to grow up, be pretty nondescript, who knows what he's going to do with the rest of his life. but when he's a youngster he does things like he parks cars at ballgames. he cuts his classmates' hair for money. these little things that we all do, he saved his money and he bought a -- and trained a flock of homing pigeons. he had a postage stamp collection. all this ordinary good old american stuff that boys do as they're growing up. but his life took a dramatic turn on december 7, 1941. he was an eyewitness, like senator akaka and senator akaka often tells the story, but dan inouye was an eyewitness to the bombing of pearl har pour. he was too young to join the military at that point but he wasn't too young to serve, and the way he served was he worked as a medicine nick the aftermath -- medic in the@math -- aftermath of that. he said he saw a lot of bl

the president's going to hawaii shortly said they had maybe two weeks left. it's not the time to go through complex policy issues because he will give them the short trip. they should extend them for some period of time, when the cr expires the 10th of the debt limit. i can spend sort of the more hard times -- hard deadlines when issues need to be addressed. i do think there are these and i mention i'm nt that, because we worked together so long list of everyone that i would. as i strongly agree to bipartisan issues. raise the retirement age for medicare and social security spoke on index it to longevity. take care of the colas, take your reducing subsidies and medicare by further means testing premium from which exist today. at premium for part a, consolidate for all the programs. there's further means testing that could be done social security through progressive indexing and things like that. those are thanks to thought around town in the policy community. he could do it though very quickly. there's a need to be done december? not a few extend our policy.

just yesterday in my headquarters the deputy chief of the pla navy was in hawaii with -- at my headquarters receiving briefings on the future activities that our navies will do together, looking, talking through the issues, the rim of the pacific exercise which you mentioned that will happen in 2014. we have a growing ability to have a dialogue at the military level that's frank and open, and we do that through consultant talks that we do on a periodic basis. and then we build a calendar of events on the areas where we think we have the most opportunity to have success working together, we build that calendar of events. and so far we're having a very good record on meeting those objectives and actually completing them. right now i believe there is this this time frame i don't know exactly, but there's an hadr exercise that we are doing in a bilateral way between the u.s. military and pa-com and with the pla. so i've just sent letters to my counterparts congratulating them on their promotions and hoping that we continue to have a good and open dialogue. because in the end, it's, you know, we

he's been a real advocate not only for the people of hawaii but wow, the way he stood up for federal work force, the civil servants who do such a great job, the outstanding job he's done on the veterans committee. lives are better off, particularly for our veterans, and i want to say a wonderful, wonderful goodbye and good hug to him, because he demonstrates that you don't have to be loud to be powerful. i also would like to pay tribute to someone on the other side of the aisle, my very good friend and someone i admire tremendously, senator dick lugar from indiana. who doesn't admire senator lugar? a judge, a scholar. i might even add, a rhodes scholar. a definite advocate for indiana. a very -- an incredible thought leader on foreign policy. ierm si'm so proud of him and tk deand the way he reached across the aisle to work with our colleague, senator sam nunn, on their famous nunn-lugar cooperative threat reduction program. they truly worked together to begin to end the threat of weapons of mass destruction in the former soviet union and made the world a better and safer place. we w
